The title Princess Knight intrigued me. The synopsis of the story made me order the book. What the synopsis DIDN'T say was the reason the princess wanted to become a knight: her mother had died in childbirth and so she had been raised by the king and her brothers and only knew that side of royal life/5(5). The princess lives with the dragons partly to get away from the foolish princes trying to win her hand. Don't Bet on the Prince_ and _The Outspoken Princess and the Gentle Knight_ both edited by Jack Zipes. Gender roles are played with all around. Gail Carson Levine has a lovely assortment of swinish princes in her short illustrated books.
Storytelling at all grade levels delights both children and their teachers, and this manual will undoubtedly be useful to teachers. "The Outspoken Princess and the Gentle Knight," an anthology of "modern fairy tales," is pretty damn awesome. It's full of plenty of stereotype-smashing stories, like one about a 6-foot-tall princess who likes to wrestle and drive forklift trucks, and another about a knight who would much rather write poetry than slay dragons.

A not all that timely collection of fairy tales from editor Zipes (Victorian Fairy Tales, etc.), written between andthe bulk of which are unsuccessful Thurber-like attempts. Written in the '70s, they are often didactic feminist reversals of traditional tales. It is, however, the stories that are neither ironic nor mocking that are the most effective.
